Remember, we can be ourselves, have fun and… BE POLITE!
Calvin Coolidge said “The business of America is business.” Maybe then Calvin, but today, most CEO’s agree the business of America is…..golf.
Where else can we:
For over a century golf and business have been inextricably linked. Often, executives prefer conducting business along emerald green fairways to traditional boardrooms. Improving our golf swing while working a business deal, gives double duty to the 4-5 hours required for a round of golf. What an inspired way to put extra hours in the day!
Golf can boost our career when we respect its traditions, understand and observe its rules of etiquette and we play reasonably well. We see clients and business partners in an environment different to the boardroom. We experience a certain bond in the game; everyone shares a common purpose and enjoyment.
Both golf and business test our ability to set and achieve goals with the lowest number of strokes or expenditures. Challenges abound from strategically placed bunkers on the course to a sharp drop in company earnings. In theory, both golf and business appear perfectible when we apply intelligence, focus, creativity, control of our emotions, commitment, time and a certain amount of luck.
With over 80% of business decision makers on the golf course, golf is Corporate America’s No. 1 pastime. Why? Relationships. In no other sport, as a participate or a spectator, can we develop lasting professional bonds like we do in golf.
Bonus – We don’t have to be great athletes to be good golfers.
We can be successful if we:
It’s advisable to be familiar with the rules of the game and the games rules of etiquette. Talking or moving while a player is hitting, stepping on a player’s line of putt, failing to replace divots, and similar indiscretions immediately labels us as amateurs. It goes without saying that cursing, throwing clubs, recklessly driving our golf cart and other obnoxious behavior will result in many exclusions.
Discussing business at an inappropriate moment can cost us a $1 million deal. So can poor table manners in the dining room or grill after our round.
It has been said “Golf is a game of equilibrium, reflecting a steadiness of purpose and a joyfulness of spirit.” This is our aspiration each time we step on the course.
We do not want to reflect Rodney Dangerfield’s gauche, nouveau riche character or Ted Knight’s tightly wound, overaggressive, win-at-any-cost, stuffed shirt character from the movie Caddyshack. While we may know golfers who fit these archetypes, they are unwelcome in golf and country club circles and there is no place for them in business golf.
Remembering “golf is a game that can’t be won — it can only be played” helps us maintain a more Zen like attitude toward the sport, our game and our playing companions.
Golf can enhance any relationship, business or personal. Welcome to the club.
